S - Glossary of Woodworking Terms

 Scalloped: Cut-outs made in a series of regularly spaced circular scoops.

 Skew Chisel (WoodturningTool): A standard skew chisel is rectangular in section, making it superb for spindle work e.g. newel posts and table legs, and the ‘rolling’ edges help turners avoid catching an edge and to allow greater manoeuvrability.  Spelching / Spelch: Splintering caused from cross-cutting wood.

 Spindle Gouge (Woodturning Tool): These are detailing tools used on between-centre work, where the grain is running parallel to the lathe bed. Spindle gouges are used to create coves, beads and other profiles on goblets, vases, bed posts, candle sticks and other spindle projects. Find spindle gouges here.

 Spiral Cutter: A special type of router cutter with helical or spiral cutting edges and grooves (flutes). Available with left hand fluting or right hand fluting to help raise chips out of the work. Find spiral cutters here.

 Staff Bead: A return bead with a quirk at each side. Refers also to the beaded strip which holds a sash window in place. Find staff bead cutters here.

 Sub-Base: An additional base fitted under the base of a router. This may be introduced to increase bearing surface, or provide a means of guiding the router in various ways. Find router sub-bases here.
